NIMBLEBITS The Beginning: Illustrated Edition
Published July 11, 2020 (e-book and paperback)
It is a novel for and about children ages 8 and up, and while writing it I was inspired by my own sons and by the stories I told them when they were young.
Though it is written for children, it may also be interesting for their parents and grandparents, giving them insight into the young mind’s struggles with adult concepts of life: family and love, responsibilities, divorce and death, fear of loss and lonesomeness. This is a story about a child’s escape to an imaginary world to cope with these issues.
Dealing with the sudden loss of his father, twelve-year-old Matthew befriends the young king of the Nimblebits, a friend who doesn’t judge; someone to share sorrows, worries, and secrets with. Matthew’s father had once told him stories about the king and his tribe of small beings who live in a lilac tree in their garden.
When he lays down under the tree with his eyes closed, Matthew follows them moving among the purple lilac flowers. Matthew reveals his insecurities and loneliness to the king.
He must adapt to his new responsibilities – helping his mother and taking care of his four-year old brother, Martin, who terribly misses their father. Matthew knows they will never forget their father, but that they must learn how to live without him and support each other.
Can the Nimblebit king help Matthew with bullying at school?
How will they deal with the mystery of death and funerals?
Can Matthew develop a successful war strategy to support the Nimblebits against their enemies, the Gruchots, who want to force them out of the garden?
Will Matthew confide in the Nimblebit king that he likes a girl from his class? Will he invite her to his secret garden and introduce her to his Nimblebit world?
Can Matthew’s friendship with the Nimblebit king protect him when his childhood collides with the very grown-up terror of a shooting at the airport?”
I invite you and your children or grandchildren to read this story about a boy and his imaginary friend.
